Ionic bonding happens between cations and anions (a non-metal and a metal)
Ionic bonding is when elements give or take electrons to become more stable (have a full valence shell) this gives the element (now ions) a charge which attracts them to ions of the opposite charge (think of magnets - and - repel each other - and + attract)
