This is not a long division problem.
This is an equation, where you need to find out what number 'x' is.
Here's how you do it:

The equation says x divided by 2 = 12

You can do anything you like to one side of the equation,
but whatever you decide to do there, you MUST immediately
do the same exact thing to the other side.

Look at the left side. The left side says "'x' divided by 2".
If we do just the opposite there, then we'll have 'x' all by
itself.
So let's multiply that side by 2.

Then, don't forget, we MUST also multiply the other side by 2 .

Here's how it goes:

'x' divided by 2 = 12

Multiply the left side by 2 : x

Multiply the right side by 2 : 24

Since we did the same thing
to both sides, they're still equal: x = 24 .

Look at that !
The question was "What number is 'x' ?"
and that's the answer ! 'x' is 24 !

If x / 2 = 12, then all we need to do to find x is multiply 2 * 12.

2 * 12 = 24

That was easier than it should have been, right? =P

Well, let's check out work using long division.

12
___
2 / 24
-2 ↓
04
- 4
0

And the work checks out.

x = 24, where x ÷ 2 = 12.
Hope that helped =)
