How does nitrogen return from the atmosphere?

Answer:

When plants or animals die the nitrogen in their bodies is converted via many routes to nitrate. The same happens with the nitrogen they excrete.

Denitrifying bacteria (not nitrogen fixating bacteria) convert nitrate back into nitrogen gas, which returns to the atmosphere.
