Although Dickinson and Brooks were born nearly a century apart, they have many things in common. For example, they were both actively writing during a time of social unrest and change. While Brooks was influenced by the civil rights and Black Arts movements, Dickinson published her poem “I’m Nobody” during the same decade as the American Civil War. Both writers lived in a time when people fought for the equal rights of minorities such as women and African Americans. While Dickinson’s era saw a lot of activity from women writers, they were mainly white women. Brooks’ era was able to see writing erupt from many cultural communities in America, including women from many different backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities.

She was born in 20th century in Kansas. She was an African-American poet who often wrote about racism. She moved to Chicago early in her life and went to various types of schools (all white, all black, and mixed). She was the first African-American author to win the Pulitzer Prize, first American to receive the Society for Literature Award, and first African-American woman to be a poetry consultant for the Library of Congress. She used end rhyme, repetition, simple words, cataloging, and matter-of-fact tone in her works. She usually writes about lower class people in a lyrical fashion.
