a piece of string is 112 inches long. Isabel wants to cut into two pieces so that one piece is as three times as long as the other. how long is each piece?

Let the length of one be = x

Length of the other = 3x

Total length = 112 inches

x + 3x = 112

4x = 112

x = 112/4 = 28

x = 28 , 3x = 3*28 = 84

So the lengths are 28 and 84 inches.
