According to the BODMAS rule, the question you had posted looks like this:

8y-9=(7/2)*y

8y-9=(7y/2)

16y-18=7y

16y-7y=18

9y=18

y=18/9

y=2

we bring ecuation to the same denominator

16y -18=7y

16y-7y=18

9y=18

y=18/9=2
