Round 5,563 to the nearest thousand,to the nearest hundred, and to the nearest ten. If you could pay a $5,563 bill with a rounded amount, which place value would you rather round to? If you could choose a rounded amount for a 5,563 prize in a contest, which place value would you rather round to?

Nearest thousand $6,000. Nearest hundred $5,600. Nearest ten $5,560. For the bill I would rather pay $5,560. If I could choose a rounded amount for the prize I would choose $6,000.

Answer:

When we rounded a number to the nearest thousand then we check the hundreds digit,

If the hundreds digit is less than 5 ( 1, 2, 3 or 4 ) then the number is rounded to next thousand while if the hundreds digit is 5 or more than 5 ( 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 ) then the number is rounded to previous thousand.

Here, the number is 5,563,

∵ Hundreds digit = 5

Thus, 5563 ≈ 6000

Now, the above procedure is also proceed when we rounded by nearest hundred ( check the tens digit ), and by nearest tenth ( check the ones digit ),

In nearest hundred,

5563 ≈ 5600

In nearest ten,

5563 ≈ 5560

The amount of money $ 5563 can be rounded to nearest tenth ( because we can save $ 3 ) while the amount in the price in the contest can be rounded to nearest thousand. ( because $ 6000 is greater than $ 5563 )
