The senior classes at High School A and High School B planned separate trips to the state fair. The senior class at High School A rented and filled 10 vans and 6 busses with 276 students. High School B rented and filled 5 vans and 2 buses with 117 students. Every van had the same number of students in it as did the buses. How many students can the van carry? How many students can a bus carry

10v + 6b = 276
5v + 2b = 117......multiply by -2
------------------
10v + 6b = 276
-10v - 4b = - 234 (result of multiplying by -2)
------------------add
2b = 42
b = 42/2
b = 21 <=== buses can hold 21 students

5v + 2b = 117
5v + 2(21) = 117
5v + 42 = 117
5v = 117 - 42
5v = 75
v = 75/5
v = 15 <=== vans can hold 15 students
