1 km = 1000 m
1 m = 100 cm
1 km = 1000 · 100 cm = 100,000 cm
15 km = 15 · 100,000 cm = 1,500,000 cm
3 cm ⇒ 1,500,000 cm
3 ⇒ 1,500,000 |divide both sides by 3
1 ⇒ 500,000
Answer: 1 : 500 000

Use the ratio of map distance to real distance.
3 cm : 15 km
Divide both sides by 3.
1 cm : 3 km
Convert both cm and km to meters.
0.01 m : 3000 m
Divide both sides by m, and multiply both sides by 100.
1: 300,000
