He wanted to find a shorter route to Asia but he found the St. Lawrence River instead.

Answer: The inability to maintain a thriving colony.

Explanation: Due to different conflicts with the Native Americans and the Spanish, lack of supplies, among other things; the French were not able to stay in the colonies Charlesfort and Fort Caroline (southeastern coastline of North America). The French decide then to move to Canada. Jacques Cartier found a new colony on St. Lawrence River in 1541. However, some years later (1607) after a very cold winter and several businesses that did not prosper, they decide return to France.
