The policy the British followed after 1689 was the Toleration Act of 1689. The Act allowed freedom of worship to nonconformists who had promised their oath to Allegiance and Supremacy. Although the act gave freedom to trade and govern themselves it excluded the Catholics, nontrinitarians and atheists.
