The answer is plan simple, 7 hours.
7 times 20 gives you 140.
So, the answer is
7 hours
.

You can make this into an equation, i.e. how many lots of 20 make 140
Where x is the number of hours which we don't know
To get just X, we can divide both sides by 20
i.e.
20/20 is 1, so:
Therefore X is 7, and so John must work 7 hours to make $140.
