What did f. scott fitzgerald achieve by using nick's point of view to tell gatsby's story?

Nick Carraway is the first-person narrator, who's always on the outside looking in. He says at the beginning that he's "inclined to reserve all judgements,", so he's almost a non-existent narrator while actually being there to observe everyone's lives around him.
