Paragraph #3: The quotation is an example of a metaphor and hyperbole. Explain why.

"How many a poor immortal soul have I met well-nigh crushed and smothered under its load, creeping down the road of life, pushing before it a barn seventy-five feet by forty, its Augean stables never cleansed, and one hundred acres of land, tillage, mowing, pasture, and woodlot!"

in this quote, it is possible to find an example of metaphor “well-nigh crushed and smothered under its load.” It might make reference to a person affected by bad lack, it portrays the state of mind in which a person can be "immortal soul".

On the other hand, a hyperbole can be spotted in “one hundred acres of land.” It might be said that if a person is smothered under a heavy load, he/she would not 'push acres of land or barns'
