Often, intrinsic and extrinsic motivators overlap. For example, an employee might really enjoy the challenge of finishing a project before it is due, and then get a cash bonus for completing the task ahead of schedule. The fun the worker finds in the work is the intrinsic motivator, while the extra money for finishing early is the extrinsic motivator.

Some people enjoy gaining knowledge. Employers can use this love of learning to help motivate their employees. Offering opportunities to learn new skills or information that can enhance a job may give employees more intrinsic motivation to do their work. For example, a computer programmer may feel extra-motivated on the job if her boss allows her to take online courses about programming languages to enhance her skills.
