Conventional political wisdom holds that candidates must run more to the _____ to capture the nomination and then move to the _____ for the general election.

First answer is: extreme.
Second answer is: middle.
If candidate wants to be recognize by voters, at the begining he must have extreme ideas, but for general elections majority of voters have middle and not so extreme opinion. Recent example is last presidential campaign in USA in 2016.
