It was a culmination of enlightenment thinking of men like locke, mill, and paine examining the breadth of individual liberty and how it relates to government. With a string of injustices(perceived or otherwise) made worse with a lack of representation repeatedly requested. Some saw this as an opportunity to take greater control over their own destiny and others looked for it to be the beginning of a time of revolutionary thought reflected in representative republic.
