The United Church of Christ got involved through their Commission for Racial Justice program. The church sent Reverend Benjamin Chavis, Jr. to the city to intervene and counsel the students. He was sent to instill a message of non-violence. Furthermore, he educated them on black history and helped organize the boycotts.

The immediate response consisted of sending Reverend Benjamin Chavis, Jr. by the United Church of Christ from their Commission for Racial Justice in order to calm the situation and talk with the students. He taught the students black history and urged them to take a non-violent approach to their protest.
