It is helicase which unwinds/separate two DNA strands during DNA replication so if the DNA strands in a cell are unable to separate then that means there is an alteration in helicase enzyme which has made it dysfunctional. DNA is a double helical molecule, it has two strands which are joined with each other with the help of hydrogen bonds. Helicase enzyme breaks these hydrogen bonds with the help of energy provided by ATP molecule thereby separating both the strands. It is extremely important during DNA replication because if the two strands will not separate then the replication process will not initiate.
