Some human proteins that are used in therapeutics, such as insulin, can be produced by genetically modified yeast. though genetically modified bacteria can also be used to produce these therapeutics, yeast is considered by many to be the superior type of organism to use for this purpose. what is the advantage of using yeast cells instead of bacterial cells when expressing human proteins?

Answer:

Because unlike bacteria, yeast have eukaryotic cells, similar to human cells. For this reason, yeasts are the best organisms to be used in biotechnological processes when it is necessary to express human proteins.

Step-by-step explanation:

In all these biotechnological processes, yeast (mainly Saccharomyces cerevisiae) played a prominent role. In addition, yeasts are considered one of the most useful microorganisms to man because they are the best known eukaryotic microorganisms.

The genetics of the yeast are well mastered, the genome of many of them was fully sequenced, a fact that represented one of the greatest achievements of biology in the twentieth century. After the advent of recombinant DNA technology, yeast could be employed in molecular genetics studies. Because of its eukaryotic nature, its cell resembles that of humans, being the perfect microorganism to express human proteins.
