A farmers’ market near his home offers six ears of corn for $1.25, 12 ears of corn for $2.64, or 36 ears of corn for $7.20. Which is the best buy? Answer: 36 ears for $7.20 is the best buy as it is cheapest among them.

Explanation:

Since we have given that

Cost of 6 ears of corn = $1.25

Cost of 12 ears of corn = $2.64

Cost of 36 ears of corn = $7.20

In above cases, we will find the cost of unit ear to get the best buy.

By using "Unitary method":

Ist case :

Cost of 1 ear of corn is given by

(1.25)/(6)=\$0.21

IInd case :

Cost of 1 ear of corn is given by

(2.64)/(12)=\$0.22

III rd case:

Cost of 1 ear of corn is given by

(7.20)/(36)\\\\=\$0.20

Hence, 36 ears for $7.20 is the best buy as it is cheapest among them.
