Why are predators necessary to maintain the balance in an ecosystem

So the prey don't grow high in number

Without predators, prey populations could rise too high, leading to them overeating their food sources, such as grasses or fruits, of those resources are depleted too much, the ecosystem could collapse. In short, predators keep the prey population in check so that they can’t wipe themselves out.
