First, multiply 40(.20) which equals 8. So now you're up to paying 48 dollars. Then you would take 48(6.25%) which equals 3. Add 3 to 48 to get your total price of $51.00.

Hi!
40 * 20% = 8
40 + 8 = 48
48 * 6.25% = 3
48 + 3 = 51
$51 were spent.
