Why did the artist of the two fridas painted two of herself?

Most people believe that it was to depict both of her heritage. Her father, Guillermo Kahlo, was German while her mother, Matilde Calderon, was a mix of Spanish and Amerindian. If you look closely at the dresses she is wearing you see that they match both sides of her heritage.
