The "black codes" enacted by Southern Legislatures in the years immediately following the U.S. Civil War, were an attempt by Southern Democrats to continue elements of the pre-war confederacy by limiting the rights of blacks in attempt to maintain white power in the region. These were ended some 10 years later in 1877 due to the Reconstruction.
