The Tidewater areas offered flatter and more fertile ground and as such needed more labor to work the fields; planting, maintaining and harvesting crops. The back-country often had poorer quality of soil and was inhabited by subsistence farmers, who grew vital crops for survival and rarely had surplus for export.
