Where would you be more likely to find enslaved African laborers—in the Tidewater or backcountry? Why?

At the time, you would have been more likely to find slaves in the Tidewater areas. The Tidewater areas offered flatter and more fertile ground and as such needed more labor to work the fields; planting, maintaining and harvesting crops. The back-country often had poorer quality of soil and was inhabited by subsistence farmers, who grew vital crops for survival and rarely had surplus for export.
