To combine the sentence "Most colonists took sides in the American Revolution" with the sentence "Some remained neutral" is necessary a linking word that expresses a contrast or that seems to disagree with was mentioned before: however (despite this). Introducing the new independent clause with a semicolon + however + a comma.
