Chinese military and political leader Chiang Kai-shek joined the Chinese Nationalist Party (known as the Kuomintang, or KMT) in 1918. Succeeding party founder Sun Yat-sen as KMT leader in 1925, he expelled Chinese communists from the party and led a successful unification of China.

In 1928, Chiang Kai-shek founded the new Chinese republic at Nanjing. He tried to reunify China under the threat of a Japanese invasion and the spread of Communism. As a leader of the National Party, Chiang Kai-shek had the idea to balance the culture of Chine with the modernity of Western models.

But not all the people were with him. The proletary, mainly peasants, declared their loyalty to Mao Zedong, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, who promoted the idea of a revolution. Then, the civil warstarted.

In the Long March of 1934, Chiang's troops surrounded the Communist base in Jiangxi. The army of Mao could scape initiatiing what now is known as the Long March. Mao's army walked 5,000 miles to the northwest of China. In the end, Mao defeated Chiang Kai-shekg and established the People's Republic of China
