What quantitative research?
Quantitative research is a method of gathering and analyzing measurable data to generate a statistical representation to explain the data. Quantitative research can also be said to be the systematic empirical investigation of measurable phenomena via statistical, mathematical and computation techniques. The main objective of a quantitative research is to develop and employ theories, mathematical and hypothesis pertaining to the phenomena under investigation. Quantitative research employs the process of measurement because it provides a connection between empirical observation and statistical expression of quantitative relationships.
The main goal of conducting quantitative research is to determine the relationship between a particular phenomena (independent variable) and another phenomena (a dependent or outcome variable) within a given population. Primarily, quantitative research designs are either experimental (subjects that are measures before and after treatment) or descriptive (subjects that are usually measured once).
Further, quantitative research deals in logic, numbers and an objective stance. It focuses mainly on numeric, unchanging detailed data and convergent reasoning rather than general reasoning.
Methods used in quantitative research methods emphasize on objective measurements, mathematical, numerical analysis of the data collected and statistical representation of data collected. Some of the methods involved in quantitative research include questionnaires, surveys and manipulation of pre-existing statistical data. In General, we can say that quantitative research focus on gathering numerical data and generalizing the data across a particular population to explain a specific phenomenon.
Characteristics of quantitative research include:
· Data is gathered through structured research instruments
· Results are based on a large sample size
· Utilizes tools such as questionnaires, numerical data and computer software
· The research question is clearly defined to which objective to sought
· Every aspect of the study is designed after data is collected
