In order to calculate the surface area of the rectangular prism, we can divide it in 6 areas:

- Two squares with dimension of 4 inches

- Four rectangles with dimensions 4 in x 12 in.

So the surface area is:


\begin{gathered} S=2\cdot4\cdot4+4\cdot4\cdot12 \\ S=32+192 \\ S=224 \end{gathered}

To calculate the surface area of the cylinder we can use the formula:


S=2\pi rh+2\pi r^2

Using r = 2 and h = 1, we have:


\begin{gathered} S=2\pi\cdot2\cdot1+2\pi\cdot2^2 \\ S=4\pi+8\pi \\ S=12\pi=37.7 \end{gathered}
