Here's the way to get the answer.

1) 3x - 3 = 2x + 9
+3 +3

2) 3x = 2x + 12
-2x -2x

3) x = 12

3(x - 1) = 2x + 9
3x - 3 = 2x + 9
3x (-2x) -3 (+3) = 2x (-2x) + 9 (+9)
(3x -2x) = (9 + 9)
(x) = (18)
x = 18

x = 18 is your answer

hope this helps
