Wiesel present this personal information first to demonstrate that he can relate to being oppressed.

Eliezer Wiesel was a Romanian-born American Jewish writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Laureate, and Holocaust survivor. He wrote 57 books, mostly in French and English, including Night. Night based on his experiences as a prisoner in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. He was also a professor of the humanities at Boston University.
