Benjamin Franklin, being the former ambassador to France, wanted the US to intervene during the French Revolution -- having previously signed a treaty with King Louise XVI. This drove a stake between the relationship of Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hamilton, since Hamilton urged President Washington not to help France since the U.S was not in a financial condition to do so. Furthermore, King Louise was eventually guillotined and Hamilton saw this as the end to the U.S.'s former relationship with France. As a retort, Franklin resigned from being President Washington's Secretary of State and announced his candidacy for U.S. President.
