The universal energy currency of life is Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), a small molecule with high energy phosphor bonds. Cells use the energy released by breaking one of the phosphor bonds in ATP to do cellular work which can be all sorts of things such as: forming new bonds (i.e. building molecules), breaking other bonds or helping transport molecules around.
