Saladin was the first sultan of Egypt and Syria. He fought against the Crusaders who wanted to eradicate Muslim faith and who fought for Christianity. After he conquered Jerusalem, the Third Crusade began. This was when king Richard the Lionheart fought Saladin and won many battles, after which they signed a truce. Saladin died of fever in 1193.
