ribbon \: b \\ = (1)/(3) + (2)/(5) \\ = (5)/(15) + (6)/(15) \\ = (11)/(15) yds

ribbon \: a + b \\ = (11)/(15) + (1)/(3) \\ = (11)/(15) + (5)/(15) \\ = (16)/(15) \\ = 1 (1)/(15) yds \: in \: total
