When you read the novel Hard Times who most likely defined Mr. Thomas Gradgrind as a wealthy, retired merchant in Coketown, England; he later becomes a Member of Parliament. He is describe in the novel as the notorious school board superintendent in the novel who is dedicated to the pursuit of profitable enterprise.
