Mentoring works best when executives stay out of the process and leave it to middle managers. choose young employees to mentor who are most like themselves. assign protégés to mentors without regard to common interests. allow it to happen informally.

Mentoring works best when the mentor finds qualities within the person they are training that may be similar or relatable to them. That there is a bond that is formed which creates a respect for both individuals. They will have a vested interest in passing their knowledge on as best as possible and will want the individual to succeed. If top executives dictate the process from afar than it may lose its desired effect.
