I guess the closest situation I can think of is the movement for gay rights or people of the LGTBQ. Being gay in America has for a long time been taboo and gays were not treated exceptionally. Marriage was considered between a man and woman and that was just how life was. But in 2015 gay marriage crossed the barriers and became a legal right in all states of the U.S. This took years of gay advocates and people boycotting and making a voice despite controversy.
