In the rock cycle, igneous, metamorphic and existing sedimentary rock can be transformed into new sedimentary rock. This occurs when weathering and erosion cause many small particles, called sediment, to be abraded from the surface of existing rocks and laid down. This sediment can then be compacted and cemented to become new sedimentary rock.
