Seismographic data is used by geologists by, 1. recording where an epicenter of an earthquake is located, 2. recording how strong an earthquake was, and 3. used to map fault lines and change fault maps.

It is used to map faults and detect changes along faults. Geologists are also trying to use this data to develop a method for predicting earthquakes. It uses a wire stretched across a fault to measure horizontal movement of the ground. Because earthquakes are all different and do not occur the same way every time.
