well, we can simply divide 10 and 1/2 by 7, that's how many "yards" time 7 goes into 10 and 1/2.

\bf \cfrac{\quad10(1)/(2) \quad }{7}\implies \cfrac{\quad (10\cdot 2+1)/(2)\quad }{(7)/(1)}\implies \cfrac{\quad (21)/(2)\quad }{(7)/(1)}\implies \cfrac{21}{2}\cdot \cfrac{1}{7}\implies \cfrac{3}{2}\cdot \cfrac{1}{1} \\\\\\ \cfrac{3}{2}\implies \stackrel{yards}{1(1)/(2)}

10.5/7 is all you would need to do to find your answer of 1.5 yards of ribbon per bow.
