Read the excerpt from Warriors Don't Cry.

I had been patiently waiting, hoping that at any moment my grandmother would signal her approval of my grown-up outfit, upswept hairdo, and high-heeled black patent shoes. Layers of forbidden makeup and dark glasses completed what I thought was the perfect disguise. The white people would never, ever recognize me from any picture they might have seen.

What is the central idea of the excerpt?

a) The narrator longs to be unnoticed in public.
b) The narrator admires her grandmother’s style.
c) The narrator has learned new styles at school.
d) The narrator strives to shock her family.

A. The narrator longs to be unnoticed in public.
This is because yes she wants to be noticed but it’s the fact on why she wants to be noticed or what she wanted to be noticed for and that’s being in disguise

Answer: a) The narrator longs to be unnoticed in public.

In this excerpt, the author describes the steps she took in order to change her appearance. It is implied that these changes are meant to help her go unnoticed as she calls them a "disguise" (which has the implication of hiding your real appearance). Moreover, she claims that the white people "would never, never recognize me," which supports the idea of the author wanting to be unnoticed.
