now, we have something like

we know that Q is the midpoint of GH, that means Q is cutting GH into two equal halves, meaning GQ = QH.

because the two halves are the same length, if we add them both, we'd end up with GH, so then GQ + GQ = GH, namely GQ twice, two halves worth.

(2x + 3) + (2x + 3) = 5x - 5

4x + 6 = 5x - 5

11 = x

well, we know GQ = 2x + 3, so then 2(11) + 3, or just 22 + 3.
