In her "The Feminist Promise", Christine Stansell tells the story of the of the great democratic movements of our times.

She depicts famous leaders, such as Cady Stanton, Mary Wollstonecraft among others, and she writes about the failures of the feminist movements as well as the successes.

Christine Stansell establishes the beginning of the early feminist movements in the 1900´s with the "New Women". In order to put this historical period into context, this is when the Nineteenth Amendment was approved, and this granted women the right to vote.
