C. Intelligent Design. In 2004 the Dover Area School District adopted a policy mandating that intelligent design be taught alongside evolution as an alternative explanation for the diversification of species. According to intelligent design the universe operates according to teleological principles such that organisms have the form that they have because each organism is fitted to a particular purpose. Intelligent design further holds that degree of fitness observed in the natural world is only possible if there exists an intelligence capable of creating it.
