The gothic style stands in a period between the early romanesque and the later rennaissaince architecure. Some particular ways in which gothic cathedrals differed from earier romanesque work are in their use of flying buttresses, the introduction of the ribbed vault, and the use of the pointed arch. Each of these innovations allowed gothic cathedrals to be built higher and to have larger and more open interior spaces.
