The shape of leaves are an indicator of the climate region they belong to. For example, leaves in humid regions are mostly smooth and unserrated. Whereas leaves in colder regions are larger and have serrated edges. The larger surface area is to allow more sunlight to fall on its surface, to aid in photosynthesis. The serrated edges allow for freeze-thaw embolism
