The ratio of red cars to blue cars in a parking lot was 5:3 if there were 40 red cars how many blue cars were there

Let

  • r = number of red cars
  • b = number of blue cars

The ratio of red cars to blue cars in a parking lot was 5:3, that is,

r/b = 5/3

If there were 40 red cars (r = 40),

40/b = 5/3

We use the Cross Products Property of Proportions.

40 × 3 = b × 5

120 = b × 5

b = 120/5

b = 24

There were 24 blue cars.
