To solve for y we need to get y by itself.
Subtract x from both sides to get 4y = -x - 12
Divide both sides by 4.
y = -x - 12
-------
4
is your answer.

4y + x = -12

4y +x (-x) = -12 (-x)

4y/4 = (-12 - x)/4

y = -3 - (x/4)

hope this helps
